Major works set to begin for $1.6b project in VIC

The $1.6 billion level crossing removal project between Dandenong and the City is about to begin major construction works, starting with a new elevated rail line.

Two giant gantry cranes (weighing a mammoth 230 tonnes) are being prepared for installation early next month near Murrumbeena Station.

The cranes will be used to install the 2,500 locally-manufactured segments of the new modern elevated line above the current one. This advanced technique will enable trains to keep running underneath, and will significantly reduce the impact on passengers and nearby homes.

Commenting on the project, Premier Daniel Andrews said, “We’re getting rid of every level crossing by building modern elevated rail – it means less disruption, five new stations and 11 MCGs of new community space – and we’re getting it done.”

“This massive construction effort will create more than 2,000 jobs building a better line to carry more trains without clogging up our roads.” – Minister Jacinta Allan

The project is expected to finish in 2018, with new power and signalling installed as well as 30 extended platforms along the Cranbourne - Pakenham line to be utilised by 65 new high-capacity trains.
