Throwback Thursday: Top 5 resources sector news of 2019

Throughout 2019, numerous projects in the resources sector have been announced or commenced construction. On this new Throwback Thursday series of posts, we will be looking back on the five most viewed resources sector stories of 2019 on Felix Project News.

1. $1 billion Gladstone Energy and Ammonia Project

Background: The Gladstone Energy and Ammonia project is a proposed facility that will include a coal gasification plant, gas processing plant, ammonia processing plant and combined cycle gas power generation plant as well as utilities and ancillary infrastructure. This project is expected to create up to 800 jobs during construction and 200 operational jobs.

Developer: Australian Future Energy

Location: Gladstone State Development Area in Queensland

Anticipated start of construction: Mid-2020

2. $10 billion Surat Basin Gas Project

Background: The Surat Gas Project is set to become the largest resource project to be built in Queensland in almost a decade. The project includes 14 petroleum leases expected to inject an extra 5,000 petajoules of gas to market for over 27 years. The Surat Gas Project is set to create about 1,000 jobs for the region - 800 during construction and 200 during operations.

Location: Between Dalby and Wandoan, Queensland

Anticipated start of construction: Late 2019

3. $15.3bn Scarborough LNG Project

Background: The Scarborough LNG Project is going to be developed as part of Woodside Petroleum’s Burrup Hub and it will comprise of seven subsea, high-rate gas wells that will be tied back to a semi-submersible floating production unit which is moored in 900 metres of water near the Scarborough field.

Location: Approximately 375 kilometre west-northwest of the Burrup Peninsula in Western Australia

Anticipated start of construction: Following Final Investment Decision in 2020

4. $1 billion Kemerton Lithium Plant Contract Award

Background: The Kemerton lithium project will include the delivery of three production trains which will produce up to 20,000 tonnes per annum of lithium hydroxide. The lithium plant included in the project will process spodumene ore concentrates from the nearby Talison Greenbushes mine.

Developer: Albemarle Lithium Pty Ltd

Location: Approximately 160 kilometres south of Perth in the Kemerton Strategic Industrial Area

5. $1 billion Kemerton Lithium Project Construction

Background: The new Kemerton plant is being built on an 89-hectare site in the Kemerton Strategic Industrial Area. This development is expected to create up to 1,000 jobs - 500 during construction and 500 once operational. The State Government will be working closely with Albemarle that work opportunities are maximised for locals in Collie, Bunbury as well as in the South-West and Murray-Wellington areas.

Anticipated completion of project: March 2021
