Two consortia shortlisted to deliver two WA METRONET projects

Following the release of Request for Proposals (RFP) to market in September 2018, two METRONET projects in Western Australia move to the next stage of the tender process, bringing the Thornlie-Cockburn Link and Yanchep Rail Extension one step closer to construction.

“This is an exciting milestone for METRONET, and shows real progress towards making these projects a reality for Western Australia.

“The two projects will transform the way people in our suburbs access the public transport network,” Transport Minister Rita Saffioti said.

The two consortia shortlisted for the delivery of both METRONET projects will now be required to submit a detailed bid that will show the tenderers’ plans on how to build the projects. The winning bidder is anticipated to be awarded a contract in late 2019.

The two shortlisted bidders are METROconnex - a joint venture between Coleman Rail, Clough and Georgiou Group - and NEWest Alliance - a joint venture between CPB Contractors and Downer.

The winning contractor will be building the two METRONET projects together as part of a bundled competitive alliance model.

“I look forward to being able to announce the preferred consortium later this year, which will stimulate thousands of jobs throughout the supply chain,” Minister Saffioti said.

The Thornlie-Cockburn Link will comprise of a 17.5-kilometre rail link that will connect the Thornlie and Cockburn Central stations as well as the construction of two new stations at Ranford Road and Nicholson Road.

On the other hand, the Yanchep Rail Extension will include a 14.5-kilometre rail line that will extend the Joondalup Line from Butler to Yanchep and the construction of new train stations at Alkimos, Eglinton and Yanchep.

“We are creating new links to the far northern suburbs of Perth and giving eastern and southern suburban residents other options - including better links to jobs - than the existing radial rail links into the city,” Minister Saffioti said.

In November 2018, the two projects were given the priority infrastructure status by Infrastructure Australia.

Construction on the METRONET projects is set to commence this year, with the delivery of both projects expected to create up to 3,000 jobs.
