Construction is now getting underway on the $560 million Fleurieu Connections Package in South Australia with early works commencing on the Main South Road and Victor Harbor Road sections of the project.

Early works include surveying, service location and geotechnical investigations along Main South Road between Seaford and Aldinga as well as along Victor Harbor Road between Main South Road and McLaren Vale.

“These works will help to connect communities and improve safety on these busy roads.

“South Australians will also benefit from the economic boost the duplication projects are set to provide, supporting 770 jobs each year during construction while help drive SA’s economic recovery.

“This is another example of our Government getting the job done for South Australians,” Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Development Barnaby Joyce said.

Once completed, the duplicated roads will provide safer and faster journeys for all motorists. The project will also help boost local tourism, grow communities and support hundreds of jobs.

“The Fleurieu Connections Package will benefit thousands of South Australians who live and holiday in this region by providing safer and faster journeys – meaning less time sitting in traffic and more time enjoying what this beautiful region has to offer.

“These projects form part of our record $17.9 billion investment in infrastructure projects across the state, as we build what matters to South Australians,” Premier Steven Marshall said.

In addition to early works commencing, feedback is also being sought on safety upgrades for Victor Harbor Road between Main Road, McLaren Vale and Tatachilla Road and to Willunga Hill.

Minister for Infrastructure and Transport Corey Wingard said: “Feedback from those who use these roads regularly is vital to ensuring we get the best possible outcome, so I encourage people to tell us what they think via the survey.”

The Fleurieu Connections Package is separated into two projects, namely the Main South Road and the Victor Harbor Road duplication projects.

The first stage of the Main South Road project will duplicate the road between Seaford and Aldinga and will include a grade separation (overpass) at the intersection of Tatachilla Road and Maslin Beach Road; a grade separation at the Port Road intersection; and a dual lane roundabout at the Main South Road and Aldinga Road junction.

Meanwhile, the second stage of the project will upgrade Main South Road from Aldinga to Sellicks Road with a ‘2+1’ lane road layout along with associated road treatments to improve safety and boost capacity of Main South Road. The ‘2+1’ layout will comprise of two lanes in one direction and one lane in the other direction, alternating every few kilometres.

On the other hand, the Victor Harbor Road project will duplicate the road between Main South Road and the McLaren Vale turn off with additional safety treatments along Victor Harbor Road – including an overtaking lane at Hindmarsh Valley.

Detailed design is already progressing for Stage 1 of the Main South Road project as well as for the Victor Harbour Road project.

“A concept design is being developed for Main South Road Stage 2 (between Aldinga and Sellicks Beach) and information will be provided to the community in the coming months with an opportunity to provide feedback.

“This project will completely transform the gateways to the Fleurieu Peninsula for locals and tourists alike.

“The Fleurieu Peninsula is globally recognised for its primary production and is one of South Australia’s premier tourism destinations. These roads carry hundreds of thousands of motorists each year and these upgrades will ensure drivers can travel safer and get home sooner,” Senator for South Australia Andrew McLachlan CSC said.

Major construction on Main South Road Stage 1 is anticipated to commence in mid-2022.

The Fleurieu Connections Package is going to be delivered by the Fleurieu Connections Alliance, which is comprised of CPB Contractors, Aurecon and GHD. You can read more about the contract award here.
