Renewable energy projects are becoming more widespread in Australia as we become more conscious of our greenhouse gas emissions. This year, Australia welcomed various renewable energy projects - from solar and wind farms to pumped hydro developments.
On this last instalment of our Throwback Thursday series, let us look back on the top five most viewed renewable energy project news of 2019 on Felix Project News.
1. Contractor appointed for $450 million Solar River Project
Background: The Solar River Project will comprise of up to 640,000 solar panels that will be able to generate about 200MW of green energy. THe large-scale renewable power project will be delivered in four stages and is expected to support up to 350 jobs over a two-year construction period during the first stage.

Location: Near Robertstown - between Burra and Morgan - in South Australia
2. Announcement of contractors for Snowy Hydro expansion
Background: The massive Snowy Hydro expansion project will connect the two existing Snowy Scheme dams - Tantangara and Talbingo - with underground tunnels and will also deliver an underground power station with the capability to pump.

Anticipated completion: 2024
3. $250 million Kondinin wind and solar farm project
Background: The Kondinin wind and solar farm will comprise of 46 wind turbines with a total capacity of 120MW and a 50MW solar farm as well as a battery storage facility. Goldwind Australia has been engaged to build the renewable energy project.

Location: Approximately 5 kilometres north east of the town of Kondinin in Western Australia
4. Early works contract signed for 250MW Kidston Pumped Hydro Storage Project
Background: The Kidston Pumped Hydro Storage Project (K2-Hydro) is part of the Kidston Hydro-Solar Project Stage 2 (K2) that also comprises of 270MW solar farm. K2-Hydro will utilise the old Kidston Gold Mine including its existing infrastructure.
Update: The McConnell Dowell - John Holland joint venture has signed an agreement to begin early works on the project. Read more about it here.

Location: Approximately 270 kilometres north west of Townsville in Queensland
5. $5.1 billion contract awarded for the delivery of the Snowy Hydro 2 project
Background: Snowy 2.0 will add approximately 2,000MW of renewable power and provide up to 175 hours of stores energy to the National Electricity Market. Construction of Snowy 2.0 is anticipated to support about 5,000 jobs.
Update: Future Generation has been appointed as main contractor and will undertake engineering, procurement and construction of the project. Read more about it here.
