Throwback Thursday: Top 5 transport infrastructure news of 2019

Numerous transport infrastructure projects across Australia have marked new milestones in 2019. These milestones include contract awards, beginning of construction or new project announcements, with most of these milestones featured on Felix Project News.

The third instalment of our Throwback Thursday series will cover the top five most popular transport infrastructure project news on Felix Project News.

1. New $476 million Victoria Cross Station for Sydney Metro

Background: A new Victoria Cross Station is set to transform North Sydney in New South Wales. The new train station will also feature a mixed-use building and it is the second integrated station to be developed under the Sydney Metro and Southwest project.

2. Contractor announced for $5.4 billion Cross River Rail Project in Queensland

Background: The Cross River Rail will include a 10.2-kilometre rail line that will run between Dutton Park and Bowen Hills as well as a 5.9-kilometre tunnel under the Brisbane River and CBD.

Anticipated project completion: 2024

3. Shortlisted builders announced for Western Australia’s METRONET projects

Background: The Thornlie-Cockburn Link is a 17.5-kilometre rail link that will connect Thornlie and Cockburn Central stations and the project will include the construction of two new stations at Ranford Road and Nicholson Road. The Yanchep Rail Extension will deliver a 14.5-kilometre rail line that extends the Joondalup Line from Butler to Yanchep and build new train stations at Alkimos, Eglinton and Yanchep. The two projects are anticipated to create up to 3,000 jobs.

4. New milestone for Western Australia’s Bunbury Outer Ring Road southern alignment

Background: The Bunbury Outer Ring Road is a 27-kilometre highway that runs between Forrest Highway and Bussell Highway. The ring road is comprised of three sections - northern, central and southern.

Update: A preferred route has been chosen for the southern alignment of the Bunbury Outer Ring Road. Read more about it here.

Anticipated start of construction: 2021

5. $5.4 billion Cross River Rail Project in Queensland marks new project milestone

Background: This multi-billion dollar project will include the construction of four new underground stations as well as deliver upgrades to existing stations along the line. The project is expected to support up to 7,700 jobs, with an average of 1,500 jobs each year and about 3,000 jobs during peak construction period.
