North East Link continues to forge ahead towards completion

What's it about: A construction blitz was undertaken in early 2025 to upgrade rail systems to prepare the Hurstbridge rail line for North East Link, ramp up the delivery of the Eastern Freeway Upgrades, and begin the installation of Victorian-made concrete culverts for the maintenance tunnels as part of the North East Link tunnels.

All three major projects are expected to be completed in 2028.

The first package set to be awarded is the enabling works, set for early 2026, with remaining packages to follow progressively.

Project background: The Sunshine Station Superhub is being delivered as part of the Melbourne Airport Rail development - also known as the Suburban Rail Loop (SRL) Airport - and it spans six kilometres from West Footscray to Albion. The project will deliver two new dedicated regional platforms and an extended concourse at Sunshine Station, three new rail bridges, new and upgraded tracks, new signalling technology, and realigned passenger and freight lines.

The constuction tender for the Muswellbrook Bypass is due to be announced in late 2026, with major works to begin the following year.

Project background: The Muswellbroook Bypass will move the New England Highway out of the town centre and onto an alternate route to the town's west. This will allow motorists to avoid traffic lights and flow freely through the Hunter towards Aberdeen in the north or the Lidell region in the south.
